Allagash Prince Tuesday

Allagash/Maine Beer Company/Rising Tide come together to concoct a collaborative hoppy belgian ale.

The new Allagash/Maine Beer Company/Rising Tide collaborative effort known as Prince Tuesday has hit the shelves in 750mL bottles this week. Touted as a ‘neighborhood collaboration ale’, Prince Tuesday has picked up a ton of attention since it was was officially made public at a release party last Saturday (May 12th) at Mama’s Crowbar in Portland. Prince Tuesday will be available in 750mL bottles and on draft. As far as we know this is a Maine only distribution as well.

The hoppy belgian rye ale clocks in at 8.1% ABV and is said to be made with “Maine grown rye”. According to the Maine Brewer’s Guild release, Prince Tuesday is constructed by using Allagash’s proprietary base malt blend and house yeast strain, locally grown organic rye provided by Rising Tide, and a hop blend and schedule created by Maine Beer. It was first brewed last year for the 1st Annual Maine Brewer’s Guild Festival.

Proceeds of Prince Tuesday sales are being donated to the non-profit group Portland Trails. Portland Trails is a member-supported urban land trust dedicated to building and maintaining a multi-use network of trails in Greater Portland. More info on Portland Trails here.

Quantities are very limited (we only got 6 bottles), with no word yet if we will be able to get more. Grab one for now and one for the rack. Available now at Madden Beverage.

West Coast India Pale Ale is one of the hottest beers right now on the West Coast and got a rating of 99 by rate.beer.com

Brewed by the Green Flash Brewing Company in San Diego, CA, this popular beer is known for its menagerie of hops that are layered throughout the brewing process: Simcoe for unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes and Cascade for floral aroma. A multi-dimensional hop experience.

Madden Beverage is one of the very first in Maine to carry this extraordinary brew and it is available in either a 22 oz bottle or 4-pack.  ALC. BY VOL. 7.3% | IBUS: 95

Is it the Bubbles or the Grapes?

Tulip Champagne Glass - best for sparkling wines.

Wine Trivia Question:

If champagne is  a sparkling wine, how come all sparkling wines are not champagne?

Sparkling wines are made one of three ways: 1) the “champagne method” is when the wine creates its own carbon dioxide (bubbles) by undergoing a secondary fermentation in the bottle, 2) by bottling the sparkling wine before it is fully fermented and letting it finish the process in the bottle, 3) by allowing the wine to fully ferment and then adding carbon dioxide to the bottle.

Sparkling wines have been made in Champagne, France  since at least the 1700s, and the region has become rightfully famous for its sparkling wine. Champagne is produced with Pinot or chardonnay grapes using the champagne method of sparkling wine production. This is the key difference between champagne and sparkling wine, as “sparkling wine” can be made with a variety of grapes and any carbonation method.

For the best drinking experience, use a champagne glass with a tall, narrow bowl, like a tulip style. Since sparkling wine is meant to be served chilled, holding the glass by the stem rather than by the bowl, keeps both the wine chilled and carbonated. The traditional wider bowled champagne glass is still used at weddings, as is the flute shaped glass, however the bubbles will not stay as long in these two styles as they will with the tulip style (see photo above).

At Madden Beverage, we have a large variety of sparkling wines and champagnes and we can also help you special order for a special occasion.

These wines are an exceptional value at $5.99 FOR THIS MONTH ONLY while supplies last!

Duck Pond Pinot Grigiot (2007)Willamette Valley, Oregon

This wine is bursting with tropical fruit aromas, such as mango and star fruit.  The 2007 Pinot Grigio is a light-bodied wine with refreshing acidity that makes it a perfect complement to fruits and mild cheeses.

Duck Pond Chardonnay (2007) – Wabluke Slope, Columbia Valley, Washington

This Chardonnay displays aromas of ripe tropical fruit with a hint of minerals.  The perfectly balanced body and silky texture is due in part to barrel fermentation in 100% new oak.  The addition of a small amount of fruity Gewurztraminerreally makes this wine pop!

Salmon Run Pinot Noir (2007) – Hammondsport,  New York

Reflecting both its origins and vintages, this wine shows very good Pinot Noir character with vibrant raspb

erry and cherry fruit, soft tannins, lively acidity and a long, clean finish. This Pinot Noir shows the potential that Pinot Noir holds in the Finger Lakes region. A very versatile wine, this Pinot Noir can both be paired with duck breast and othergame dishes and with more delicate fish or poultry dishes.
